Hon. C. 3. P.,
P. C. Noble was reported on 15th./
September for being drunk and returning off duty an hour
before the proper time. He went to Hospital the same
night or next morning, as was his usual custom when re-
ported for misconduct. He is put down in the returns as
suffering on this occasion from sciatica and piles. He
left the Hospital on the 25th. September. On that day I
went by your instructions to see Commodore and enquire
whether any decision had been arrived at by the Naval
Authorities as to the disposal of any of the marines
who might be dismissed from this force. (Some time
when Acting Captain Superintendent of Police,
before,
I had foreseen that Noble would certainly end his career
by dismissal and had raised the question, which was re- ferred by the Colonial Secretary to the Commodore and by the latter to the Admiral). The Commodore informed me after enquiry, that he had received no reply from the Admiral, but that he would receive Noble on the Tamar and obtain instructions as to his ultimate disposal. I reported to you and you sent Noble to the Commodore. At this distance of time I cannot say exactly what
passed
